Intelligence Can Be Nurtured
Thinking Loft’s philosophy is to teach children to learn independently. Having the right skills to learn independently will therefore enable them to succeed not just in school but in life as well. Our Holidays Workshops are therefore designed to encourage children to observe the world around them, to ask questions about it and to try and find out answers to those questions themselves.
In this 1.5 hr workshop, children are going to have some fun with bending light and creating a magnifying glass without using glass!
They will be challenged and guided by our experienced facilitator to explore and think about the following phenomenon :
1.Why is it not easy to catch fishes with just your hands?
3.Why do we see rainbows?
4.How does magnifying glass make things look bigger?

The facilitator will guide the children through a series of experiments that will allow the children to understand the concept of refraction and through the discussions, help the children to draw their own conclusions to the questions raised above. The final activity will be the making of a magnifying glass (without using any glass) by every child.

The ability to reason by analogy is central to human cognition and learning. Analogy is a higher order reasoning skill which allows children to transfer knowledge to new situations, and learning by taking in a variety of information from different contexts.
Analogical thinking is especially important in Mathematics as it teaches children to break problems down into their component parts, making it easier to recognize familiar formats that enable students to produce solutions.
In this 1.5 hr workshop, children will be introduced to the concept of pictorial, verbal and symbol analogies through a series of games. At the end of the workshop, children would be able to
•Reason and articulate solutions to analogical questions

Perception is the foundation for all learning, including memory, thinking and imagination. Between the age of three to six, children embarks on the cognitive developmental process of transforming perception through active acquisition of sensory standards, namely size, shape and colours.
Once children are able to identify the sensory standards and compare objects using these standards, the next developmental stage would be to analyse complex objects that consist of more than one sensory standard. The child looks at the whole object, divides it into separate parts according to the relevant sensory standards, identifies its relationships, imagines an internal model of the whole object and then assembles all the elements in order to produce an image. In short, the child engages in perceptual modelling.
This workshop is based on the unique UK programme and is designed for parent and child to engage in the fun of perceptual modelling together. It is also the perfect platform to provide inspirations for parents for some future ideas on perceptual modelling at home!
